Bio, Resume & Publications

Mark has exhibited in London, New York and Tokyo, as well as throughout the US. He is well-represented in museum and private collections, including the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum. He had two major exhibitions of his big pots at the Nasher Museum at Duke University in 2010 and at the Ogden Museum in New Orleans in 2011.

His work has been featured in numerous publications including the Smithsonian magazine, the cover of American Craft magazine, and he has written extensively in the ceramic press. Mark and his work were featured in the PBS TV series Craft in America.

Mark and Nancy Sweezy co-curated the highly-regarded exhibition, The Potter’s Eye: Art and Tradition in North Carolina Pottery at the North Carolina Museum of Art October 2005 – March 2006. UNC Press published a superbly illustrated catalogue/book for the show. In 2017 Mark curated a show entitled Great Pots from the Traditions of North and South at the North Carolina Pottery Center.

Highlights amongst Mark’s numerous accolades include being named a United States Artists Fellow in 2015, one of the five finalists for the American Craft Council’s Balvenie Rare Craft Award in 2014, the Archie Bray Foundation’s Voulkos Fellowship in 2014 for outstanding contributions to the ceramic arts, Best in Show at the NC Botanical Garden’s Sculpture in the Garden exhibition in 2013 and 2014, and the Sam Ragan Award by St. Andrew’s University in 2013.

Mark served as President and member of the Board of Directors at the North Carolina Pottery Center in Seagrove, NC from 2005 – 2018.

 


Publications

The Potter’s Eye: Art and Tradition in North Carolina Pottery is a catalogue/book from the exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC, October 30, 2005 – March 19, 2006.

Published by UNC Press and written by Mark Hewitt and Nancy Sweezy, with photography by Jason Dowdle. The book is available in hardcover with 235 color images throughout its 296 pages.

Born in Stoke-on-Trent, England; father and grandfather were Directors of Spode.
1976-1979; Apprenticed to Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge Pottery, Bodmin, England.
